Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, can be described most simply as software that imitates human behaviours and capabilities. This is achieved by utilising an AI model that has been "trained" on a large amount of data.
AI can be used on its own, or in conjunction with other technologies such as, sensors, geolocation, or robotics, to perform tasks that would otherwise require human involvement.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools
Below are some of the generative AI tools available today:
- Adobe Firefly - A family of generative AI models for generating images, videos, audio, and vector graphics directly from text prompts, that are integrated into Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Premier Pro.
- Apple Intelligence - This is built into the Apple operating systems macOS and iOS, and is designed to provide assistance across Apple devices with general productivity tasks.
- ChatGPT from OpenAI - Useful for general productivity tasks, such as writing, coding, research, and complex brainstorming, as well as generating images.
- Claude from Anthropic - Ideal for general productivity tasks including, writing, coding, and analysing large documents.
- Google Gemini - Gemini is both a standalone chat assistant, as well as being integrated into areas of Google Workspace, such as Docs and Drive. It is primarily used for general productivity tasks such as writing, coding, research and complex brainstorming.
- Grok from xAI - A tool that can be used for text and image generation, as well as engaging in conversation with its users. It can access information in real-time from posts on X, formerly Twitter, as well as the web, and has less guard rails than other generative AI solutions. Its uses include information gathering, coding and analysis of current events.
- Microsoft Copilot - A tool that is built into a number of Microsoft products, including the Microsoft Edge web browser, the Windows operating system and various applications within Microsoft 365, such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. It is built on top of the GPT models from OpenAI and is useful for things such as writing, coding, research and brainstorming.
- Midjourney - A specialist tool for creating high-quality concept art and stylised illustrations based on simple text descriptions. It can create both photo-realistic images, as well as imaginative and surreal artworks.
- NotebookLM from Google - Built on top of Google Gemini models, this tool is said to be "grounded" as it answers questions based strictly on the information that is uploaded to it. It is said to be your research and thinking partner and can be used to create an audio overview of what is uploaded in the form of a "deep dive" discussion.
- Sora from OpenAI - A specialist tool for creating physically accurate video. It enables users to create video content from simple text prompts for creative storytelling.
- Suno - A specialist tool for creating music, including both vocals and instrumentation, as well as album artwork, all from a simple text prompt, with the option of uploading context files that include sample audio, for example.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Glossary
Computer Vision
A part of AI that can handle the processing of visual elements, by applying a machine learning model to items such as images and videos.
Document intelligence
An area of AI that provides support for the processing of text in order to make sense of the information contained within.
Generative AI
An area of AI that can be used to generate original content. Applications that utilise Generative AI accept natural language input and then provide a response in any one of a number of different formats, including natural language, images, and code.
Hallucination
An incorrect response from an AI based system, where false information is presented as fact to the end user.
Knowledge mining
The act of extracting information from large volumes of data, which is often unstructured.
Large Language Model (LLM)
An AI model that has been trained, using Machine Learning, on large amounts of text so that it can understand language and generate human-like text.
Machine Learning (ML)
Machine learning, or ML for short, is a subfield of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn patterns from data and make decisions or predictions without being explicitly programmed.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
A part of AI that can be used to understand both written and spoken language, as well as provide responses to it.
